So much is going on at the farm now! Garden, bunnies, meat birds, and chicks!

We've hatched out some of our own chicks for the first time, in an incubator that holds 55 eggs. So far, 35 have emerged, and there are still more that have pipped and should be hatching tomorrow.

The Rhode Island Red and "Black Sexlink" chicks are from our RIR rooster Sam and our layers. The light yellow birds are Leghorns I got at the West Leb Tractor Supply to raise at the same time so that Bill can have white eggs (he has a bad gut reaction to brown eggs). The two grey chicks are "Sapphire Gems," a bit of an impulse purchase when the Claremont Tractor Supply didn't have any Leghorns. They have the "lavender" gene, which I want to incorporate into our farm's breeding mix.

I found that great quote in the latest The Old Farmers Almanac online that covers everything you ever wanted to know about eggs.

Sunny Woodlands Farm currently has eggs for sale in East Plainfield, NH. We also have some meat birds (assorted types of "heavy" heritage breed chickens) for sale now that are about 11 weeks old, and will be ready to harvest at 4-5 months old.

The grass is now tall enough for a first mowing, and the Comfrey (the plant in the bottom left of the picture) is doing well. This picture is from about 10 days ago, and it's almost twice as big now. I just fed some to our rabbits, and I found this detailed blog post from Rise and Shine Rabbitry about the benefits it has for them.

Our meat birds are about 5 weeks old. We have 24 "assorted heavies" from McMurray Hatchery.

They don't tell you what they sent, but there's a list of breeds they are picking from. We have a definite positive ID on the Speckled Sussex, and some good guesses on most of the rest.

I had been assuming that the really big one in the front was a New Hampshire or a Rhode Island Red, but then I was watching a video on meat birds on the "Homesteady" YouTube channel, and realized that maybe that one is the "free surprise chick" that came with the order and could be a Freedom Ranger. Those mature more quickly than the heritage breeds (and classic crosses like RedStar and Blackstar sex links) that were on the list of possible "heavies" we ordered, and that's exactly what this guy is doing.
